So your track just got accepted into a music library — congrats! You’re now officially part of the mysterious world of sync licensing. But one of the first questions that pops up is… when do you get paid?

First off, sync libraries don’t pay for “acceptance”

This trips up a lot of artists. Just because a sync library adds your track doesn’t mean money instantly shows up in your account. Sync libraries aren’t like clients who commission a song — they’re more like storefronts that carry your product.

You get paid when that product (your song) gets used.

Payment comes from usage, not uploading

When someone licenses your track for a commercial, a TV show, or a YouTube ad — that’s when the money flows. Until then, your track is just chilling in the catalog, ready to shine.

The more sync libraries it’s in (non-exclusive), or the better the placements (exclusive), the better your chances of getting paid.

Here’s what gets paid — and who pays it

There are a few ways you might earn:

• Sync Fee: A one-time upfront payment when someone licenses your track.
• Performance Royalties: Paid by your PRO (like BMI, ASCAP, or SESAC) when your track airs on TV or radio.
• Backend Royalties: From YouTube Content ID, streaming platforms, or digital fingerprinting.

Sometimes it’s a combo. Sometimes it’s one or two. Depends on the deal and the usage.

Timing varies (but it’s not instant)

Music moves slow sometimes — especially on the backend. PROs pay quarterly. Some sync libraries pay monthly. Sync fees may take weeks after usage to process.
